The NDR provides the computerized database known as the Problem Driver Pointer System (PDPS). This system contains the records of individuals whose privilege to operate a motor vehicle has been revoked, suspended, canceled, or denied or those who have been convicted of serious traffic-related offenses in the United States such as driving under the influence or driving while intoxicated from drugs and or alcohol. These records are managed by each state’s Motor Vehicle Agency, or MVA.
When an individual applies for a new driver’s license or tries to renew a license, the state in which applying must check the MVA system to see if you are listed as a “problem driver” and if so, the state must then investigate the driver’s history from the state that reported the driver to the NDR system.
At this point, the individual must contact the state who reported them as having a revoked or suspended license. You must then follow all requirements the reporting state issues prior to being able obtain your driver’s license in that state or any other states.
In other words, once you have a suspended or revoked license, or your license has a hold, you must apply to resolve the penalty, or you will never be able to obtain a new license or renew your driver’s license in all 50 states.
When this occurs, the following are the most commonly seen requirements to remove the suspension, revocation, or hold:
- Pay fines and other associated fees
- Submit an alcohol drug evaluation or substance abuse assessment completed by a licensed counselor or therapist
- Submit to an alcohol and or drug screen
- Complete an alcohol drug awareness course or other rehabilitation recommendations
- Submit a state renewal application or request for a hearing
